Recording the contemporary Opera, An American Dream, with Conductor Casey Robards.

An American Dream is a critically acclaimed one-act opera commissioned by Seattle Opera. Set in the Puget Sound area during World War II, it tells the story of two families – Japanese Americans Makoto and Hiroko Kobayashi and their daughter Setsuko, and newlyweds Jim Crowley, an American veteran, and his wife, Eva, a German Jewish refugee. Jim's designs on the Kobayashi's home set Setsuko and Eva in opposition. But as the story unfolds, the women forge a bond of respect and friendship that transcends wartime dualities.

Since its premiere in 2015, An American Dream has enjoyed twelve productions, continuing in 2024 with new productions in Tokyo and New York. Its message — that the “American Dream” should be based on empathy and kindness, not fear and exclusion — is as relevant today as it was in the wake of Executive Order 9066.
